Robot Sketch #2
Here's the other sketch for my robot paintings, for the upcoming Space 242 "I...YOU...WE ROBOT!" show coming up this month. This is the match to my last drawing - the two are a couple. They represent each halves of the excitement and pain that love brings. I hesitate to post this type of art sometimes because, for me, it's something deeply personal and emotional that I'm not sure most will understand.
I'll post the finished paintings after they're completed.
Also, here's a sketch of what could become my new business card front. I figure sometimes it's hard to put a name to a face, so I'm just making it easy for everyone. Also, who wouldn't want to stare at my pretty face all day? DERRR
More updates this coming week with previews for my spring show: Guilty Pleasures with Doug Poole. Go check out his work if you get the chance!
And submissions for the Robot show are due this upcoming Monday, January 11th. I encourage anyone with a love for anything robotic to submit something!

Skeshes.
Some things I did today.
The one with the clown girl, I've decided to make into a painting. Like, a real painting. I've been struggling a lot with which media is my favorite. I feel like there's a lot of pressure on artists to do one thing and one thing only so it's easier to sift through all of us. It makes remembering us easier.
But I'm still so young. There are so many things I want to try, still. I don't know if I'll draw this way for the rest of my life. Picasso wasn't Picasso until he started being a little wacky.
Anyways, some skeshes.

Clown girl. She's holding a caterpillar for Lindsay.

Kenny. Alison Cowell's dude. I don't know why, but I'm obsessed with him. She has a book coming out soon! (I took creative liberty with his hair. I hope you don't mind.)

Wario. Everybody draw Wario.

Fancy New Header
Too bad if you have seizures when you see it - I only get to use fluorescent colors on the internets.
Since I don't have much to show at the moment outside of progress, I'll put up some of the stuff I've been doing for Modus Lotus, one of the companies I'm interning for as a graphic artist/assistant to my queen, Veronica Hebard. She's my favorite to work with! :D

So here's a black and white flyer I did for ML, and then another one I'm currently working on to be featured in an upcoming Detour anthology by the Undercover Fish Group. Yay assignments!

First Night of Spring
And it's still really cold outside. :( But it's going to warm up really soon!
I haven't posted in AGES (5 days) so I'm here to update you on my art-doings.
First off, I've decided on what my promo keychains are going to look like. They're inspired by my new severe obsession with eyeballs with wings/hats/legs. I'm going to draw a million of them and color them and post them here. Hooray!
Second off, I had to make a comic for Andy Fish's comic class at Emerson. We had an hour to illustrate a girl playing basketball and getting shot by a vengeful deer. This is my translation. Yay for graphic violence!
Third off, this is the beginning to my new NEW promo postcard. It's just in the inked stage, but it'll be really cool when it's done! I promise!
Look out for new stuff soon! I finished my fourth degree project piece as well and will have that posted up very soon.
Toodle-loo!

Half rant/half not

GOOD:
-Got invited to be in Veronica's Pop Euphoria show in Worcester this weekend. I'm so excited! I picked my mime piece about Hamlet. And I'm gonna try to bring toys for the childrens, as Toys For Tots is gonna be there. Try to make it if you can! It's gonna be a blast. :) Gotta mount my piece somehow tomorrow, even though it's 12" x 12 3/4". Haha.
-Got another piece done for Black and White today, along with a final sketch that I just have to convert into a scratchboard masterpiece. I want to make Dan Blakeslee proud.
-I had thought a piece for my fashion history class was due next week, but turns out it was due today, so I had to be a Tricky Vicky and draw it in class, ink it in class, print it out on the break (with help from Amanda with the rolly scanny things), color it in LESS than two minutes (very tastefully, I might add) and mount it onto foamboard. It looks awesome. I don't like doing work at the last minute, but at least it's done. Yay!
-My mom is OFFICIALLY cancer-free. Hooray! *HUGE sigh of relief* Yay Mummy!
-Jared has been very, very wonderful to me lately. He's been a really big support while I've been shoving push pins in my eyes through finals, and I'm excited to go see him! But first: FINISH WORK.
-New shoes came in the mail! I love them! And business cards tomorrow! Yay!
BAD:
-I'm really tired lately, and my acid reflux has been kicking in something fierce. It's from all the caffeine, sleep deprivation, unhealthy eating habits (or non-eating habits for that matter), constant stress, and just working as hard as I possibly can. It's all gonna be worth it though.
-Money really, really isn't doing so great these days. My rent was due a few days ago, as were the bills, and I've just been on the edge of my seat waiting for payday so I can kiss that money goodbye. I bought a new box of Cheez-its. Woo.
-I had to cancel my CAT scan (for my blinding migraines) for Monday because of the stupid Degree Project show. Everything for that is completely unorganized, especially the part where they want ALL the classes to be there but not critiquing kids from their own class but not having the artist present but not keeping all the work in one room and also trying to fit 40 students' process work onto maybe 8 tables in a very small room (914). That room has terrible lighting, too. They didn't even account for the fact that many students have class early on Mondays and wouldn't be able to bring it in at 11 unless they used their break from class. Blarfgkhjg.
-I REALLY need to dye my hair. The red needs to be gone. Now. Like, right now.
Ok, I'm done complaining now! Yay school! Yay everything! Yay Jared! <3
Time to go lay down. <3

Alive/conscious after surgery.
Had my surgery today. Everything went smoothly, and everyone at the hospital was really nice to me (a couple of nurses stopped to tell me they like my hair <3). I can type with two hands, but the size of the MASSIVE splint on my left arm makes me keep hitting the control key. Grr.
Lots of resting today and tomorrow. Probably some homework tonight. Visits with friends tomorrow and on the weekend. And I'm going to my Dad's boat club on Sunday to have lobster! Delicious.
My wrist is killing me, and I'm still covered in iodine, but things are generally well in my world. I just need lots of pampering. PAMPER ME. WORSHIP ME.
But I don't want to leave you guys without an art update, so here's a sketch for my black and white class. We're supposed to be doing a dream-like piece, so I'm veering off into nightmare world.

Enjoy! Thank God I still have my right hand! (Also, using PS 7.0 at my parents' house is weird. And their computer runs a LOT faster than mine...)

Stipple finish.
I'm like a fiery pigeon with a fucked-up wrist.
Before I ship off to Rockland for some wholesome surgery goodness:

I'm working on a stipple portrait of my Mum for Black and White. The assignment was to illustrate someone important to us, incorporating 3 elements of their lives in a black and white stipple piece. I chose my Mum because of her role in my life. When I was little, I remember her coming to pick me up at school at 6:30 every night, in a power suit and big black sunglasses, strutting across the playground as the strongest woman I knew. She recently beat breast cancer this year, a disease that her mother went through that I most likely will also go through. But because of her strength, I'm not afraid, and I'll kick the shit out of cancer if I even hear about it.
Her support since I was 8 about going to art school (we went to art classes together in matching turtlenecks, aww!) and her support now that I'm a big girl has been one of the few things keeping me sane. So here's my mum's portrait in sketch form. I'll post the finish when I'm done.
The rabbit symbolizes the children's book I've been working on with the rabbit characters, as we raised dozens of rabbits when I was a child and my very first stuffed animal is a big pink bunny named Bunny Bun-Bun. I had also written a poem about my sister when she was going through a lot of emotional problems about being a rabbit trapped in a cage when we lived in a California, only to be released and nervous and scared when we moved to Mass. I don't know - it's this really big thing in my life that's hard to explain. "Bamford" is more than just a word to me.
Speaking of Bamfords, I'm doing a commission for my sister Jessica of a coat of arms of the o'mighty Bamford name.
Bamford is an Irish name, as far as I know. I'm about 90% Irish, and me great grampy McQuinn was my grampy's daddy. So I WOULD have been a McQuinn if someone didn't have a random stint in England to change my last name to Bamford. But whatever.
My aunty Susan still lives in California, and she's probably my favorite relative. She does photo restoration in her spare time along with documenting the roots of the Bamford clan. She has books and binders and enormous amounts of information on my family history, hopefully something one of of younger kids will continue when she's too old to do so. She really truly understands me as human, so recreating this important element in our family history (probably in a more graphic, contemporary way) will be my part in continuing our name for future generations. It's always good to know where you came from, and maybe one day my great grandkids will think I was a good artist. They better respect me, or they'll be gettin' a whippin'.
I'm pretty much rambling at this point, so I may as well continue as a meditative thing for myself. Andy Fish gave me a ride to work today, which was really really really nice of him, because I totally could have walked, but there are creepy people in the Fens and I've already been nearly assaulted by enough homeless men this week. But he asked me if I was a nervous person, and I kind of puffed up like a threatened bird. No one's ever told me I seem nervous, or if I look uneasy. I'm usually the person who talks too much, or is too confident, or is overbearing. So it ruffled my feathers (to continue the bird analogy). I guess I'll just have to be more show-offy and overbearing from now on as to not embarass myself. (All I thought of in the car was, "Allison, don't swear as much as you normally do. He's your teacher." haha.)

I should be asleep.
Showed Brian Butler my Ice Cream People piece. He liked it! Yay! So hopefully that'll be up soon. I'll let you know. In the meantime, check out the other entries in his gallery! They're awesome!!
Other than that, went flyering today at MassArt. Accidentally slept through my english class. Been burnt out lately. But I'm spending the weekend with my family (we're going to Salem for my sister's birthday), and we have an extra day off next week, so that'll give me more time to get my stuff done... even though I'm caught up/ahead with everything.
Also, I'm making a new flyer for Blick, for our Montana spray paint demo, which will be AWESOME. Artists for Humanity is going to be there demonstrating, and we generally have a good time on demo day. It's one day out of every few where my managers aren't stressed, the customers aren't cranky, and my coworkers are joyous. Maybe we'll have snacks again this time.
But, uh, here's my guy that I made up for my flyer. I like having a hand-done element in all of my flyers. They're becoming more completely hand-done each time I do one. I think I have a dozen or so to start a portfolio with so far. Sweet.

And yes, he has a Decepticon belt buckle. Hell yes.

First finished piece of the year (technically).

This is something I did for Roosh's Black and White Illustration class.
It's an editorial picture based on an article about uranium/plutonium-contaminated water in New Hampshire. I remember one line saying people were worried about "long-term effects."
I just wanted it to be silly and have kind of an old-school Hanna Barbara cartoon feel.
Brush and ink - I had never used it before this assignment.
In other news, I'm pretty caught up in my classwork, and as a reward to myself, I went to visit my boyfriend this past weekend. We got drunk and played cards and I beat him with his cane when he misbehaved and hung out with his family, who I adore. I had a wonderful time, and, despite doing random bits of homework before he got up yesterday and today, it was very, very relaxing. Jerry helps me to remember that life is great at present and that sometimes I need to hang on and appreciate what's around me before my head jumps to tomorrow and the next week too quickly. He's recovering so quickly, and I hope we'll be able to celebrate our one-year anniversary soon (he broke his leg on the 7th of September, and our anniversary was the 11th :( ).
So now I'm off to work on Andy Fish homework and Mister Roosh work. Boh-bye.
