2013 - The Year

This past year has been an amazing yet trying year. My fiancé's family came over from Europe to meet my family. We were able to celebrate our engagement in Sweden and on American shores. I got to fish for crayfish and cook a feast with them using the traditional Swedish recipe. I started roller derby this year and subsequently injured myself (doing phsyical therapy now, ugh). It was one of the first years I didn't move apartments. I got to watch one of my best friends get married. I participated in several gallery shows (including my first overseas shows!) and attended my first comic con in New York. I travelled A LOT. I was able to mentor some teenagers at work (am I a grown-up now?).


And 2013 is the year I get married to my best friend.

A friend is creating a dress for me (the design is very Sailor Moon from the back - not a coincidence). Another incredibly talented friend Katie Blauer is designing my shoes. I've designed the Save the Dates, and I'm looking forward to creating some fun and quirky invitations and favors and fun things for our guests.

They say wedding planning takes over your life : MY BODY IS READY.

Happy 2013, followers. Thank you for sticking with me for another year.

Wedding Invitations for the D'Angelo-Earlys

Last weekend I was a witness for one of my best friend's weddings. The ceremony was short and sweet with lots of laughter and none of the rigidness that I've come to expect from weddings. It was heartfelt (I criiiiied), wonderful, and in a beautiful location we're both very close to.

They're so cute together! And look at those sparklers on their fingers!

Shteppé D'Angelo is a friend I've known since I was 11. Her name is originally Stephanie, but more than a decade of inside jokes has led my family and all of my present friends to refer to her as Shtep.

Stephanie > Step-on-me > Steppy > Shteppé > Shtep

Totally normal. 


Shtep and I met in middle school on our first day of 7th grade. We were the new kids in class. I was moving from Los Angeles, and she was moving from another town in the south shore of MA. Basically, two guidance counselors pushed us together and said, "MAKE FRIENDS!"

Shtep was wearing a black snake skin vest with matching flared pants and an Axel Rose bandana across her forehead. I was wearing silver leopard print pants, a poofy vest and a bucket hat. The first thing I said to her was, "I like your pants." And our fate as friends was sealed from there.

We're super-duper grown-ups now!

I'm not exaggerating when I say I feel that her husband, Chris, is the perfect person for her. We've seen much of each others' lives (including some lame ex-boyfriends on both counts), and I have no doubt that they're meant to be together. It's already been years! I'm not worried about them at all.

 I designed their invitation, and they wanted to go with an old school video game style. The significance of the Mario/Princess Peach spin-off is that they met while he was the manager of a video game store. They're both super nerdy gamer nuts (tattoos included), and they have such a blast together. They were really happy with how they came out, and that's all that matters to me. I made them a special poster too for guests to sign at the reception.

Punching it up a Notch

I work with so many incredibly talented people at Converse. I'm truly lucky to have such a wealth of different skills and talents around me to give/get critique and work on projects I normally wouldn't get to. Recently my coworker Katie Blauer, a super talented and trained eye for footwear of all kinds, asked me to add a little neon to some beautifully-crafted silk flowers for a pair of heels she was making.

 I told her I own all the neon paint ever and that this would be no problem.

Katie brought me a beautiful Matthew Williamson dress to use as reference, making note of the unique green and pink orchids printed on the fabric. I picked out about 12 tubes to work with and got settled in my studio on one of the nicest days of the year so far.

And yes, I know what you're thinking: That's a LOT of paint tubes for such a tiny project. But I'm very picky about mixing and creating unique hues. I don't often use any color straight out of the tube. And especially working within the neon spectrum, I wanted to go balls-to-the-wall to enhance these babies.

Raw Artists : Boston showcase

Piggy and These Ghosts They Know Me just hanging out at the Activate show!

I was lucky enough to be picked for Raw Boston's Activate show that took place on the 9th at the Estate Theater in Boston. Along with several other painters, photographers, fashion designers, performers, violin players, latex-clad models and hair models, I hung 10 of my proudest pieces (several of them unveiled for the first time) in what I referred to as the "Rainbow Corner" of The Estate.

And note to self : 100 stickers will move more quickly than you think!

I also participated in my first photoshoot ever! And I did a video interview for the first time as well. I was really nervous, but somehow I didn't word vomit at all during the interview. I feel like I represented myself well, and the photographer was happy to see I wasn't afraid to kick my feet up!

In my life, I surround myself with many other talented people : some models, musicians, singers, DJ's, and many other fabulous people. As a visual artist, I'm accustomed to fading into the background and letting my work speak for itself, generally. I'm used to taking the pictures, not being in them, so to speak. So to have the spotlight for an evening made me feel like a rock star!! I felt beautiful and incredibly proud of my work and strong as an artist. Having so many of my friends and family at the event only made it even more special for me.

Unicorns for the Unicorn Gallery in Camden, London

Just finished this bad boy! Printing it tonight with the help of Alex Carlson and her beautifully convenient Epson printer, then mounting it onto wood (using Kathy Weller's awesome tutorial) to ship off to the Unicorn Gallery in London!

This will be my very first international group show, so I'm really excited!


Speaking of shows, I've been attending a TON of openings lately:
-New skull show at the Ars Moriendi Project last Monday, Jordan Pantiedosi and friends at the Yes, Oui, Si gallery near the MFA (used to be the old Rice Bowl Gallery), my own show at The Estate last week (pictures to come!), a gallery show this Thursday featuring Karl Stevens, and another show on Friday featuring several of my favorite artists, including Raul Gonzalez.

I'm also preparing for a skate deck show, a t-shirt collaboration, developing my first line of toys, painting another skull for the Ars Moriendi Project, random interviews, a talk at MassArt, and a super secret endeavor involving the Paint Pens in Purses ladies!

And just as a last thought - here are some other funky colorways I'd played around with after finishing this piece. When you use Illustrator every single day at work, Photoshop turns into a magical no-limitations breath of fresh air for effects!

Unicorns : 80's Throwback Show

Hey guys, fantastic news! I've been asked to participate in Raw Artist's Boston showcase this year! I'm one of a handful of artists picked for the event, and I'm sure it's going to be rad! Settle Down mini painting

New mini painting entitled "Settle Down" available in my Etsy shop. Inspired by my new most favoritest song by Kimbra.

My friend Veronica was also inspired by her - you should check out her amazing blog post here! One of the girls in the music video influenced her Frankenstein graphic novel. She's someone you wouldn't want to miss following!



Oh and also the entire background of this painting is covered in glitter. IDGAF.

Puppy painting!

I was asked by a friend's friend to make a painting of their parents' dog for Christmas. I used to do pet portraits all the time in high school (random, I know), so it was fun to do one after so long. I understand how important animals are as family members are, I've even painted one of my own kitty Gogo! (see : Gogo Fluff Deity)

His name is Beary! :)
