Space 242 : Revenege of Freeky Fright Nights Review

Me in my silly Halloween costume getting interviewed for the first time ever!
And I sound like a nervous valley girl, haha

My friend Christina Lacoste from the Boston Weekly Dig wrote up a great review of this weekend's event. SO much AMAZING work, it was truly a Halloween feast for the eyes. This is my favorite time of year!

Thanks so much for the mention, you guys!

Two gallery openings this week!

I'm lucky to have been accepted into two different gallery shows this month, both with MANY of my favorite artists! I'm really excited to see so much new work from so many talented people.

First up :

Lincoln Arts Project & Fish McGill present
A Collection of Bostonia Collectives

Lincoln Arts Project, 289 Moody St, Waltham MA

I'll be showing as part of the Paint Pens in Purses Collective, showing off two of my newest paintings : The Demonicorn and These Ghosts They Know Me

I even had a quick minute to contribute to one of my favorite collectives, Brian Butler's Ice Cream People!

Second up :

Revenge of Freeky Fright Nights! Annual Horror Ho-Down
hosted by Space 242 at the Fourth Wall Project

Space 242 was on hiatus until now for the past year, so naturally I was STOKED to see they were holding another opening. And for my favorite holiday : Halloween! I've got one of my spookiest paintings up for the show, and I'm looking forward to the opening reception!

Come out! To both! You'll love it! Can't wait!
(also free beer at both events!)

Things lately

have been good.

I've had some tough times dealing with stress and anxiety over my place in life and the world right now. But because I have amazing family and friends, I've been able to straighten things out and get back to being optimistic and ready for anything.

I went to the Space 242 gallery opening tonight for the DESTROY BOSTON show, and I have to say the work was definitely interesting. There were rocks carved with wizards and crazy faces and giant nipple/spike/egg/creature drawings on the walls. I finally got to meet Tak Toyoshima, illustrator of the comic Secret Asian Man, and he's a really nice guy. We chatted about school and a few other things, and I told him I really want to design another cover. That'll be one of my first priorities after school's over, along with finishing my first comic.

So things are feeling pretty good for right now. I hung my pieces for the Illustration Degree Project Show, and the opening is Monday night from 6 - 8 in the President's Gallery on the 11th floor at MassArt. Stop by if you get a chance! All of the work looks fantastic!

Again, I want to thank my mum (who took me out to buy business-y clothes and got me a really nice haircut), my friends (Lindsay, Alex, Sarah, Kate, Alycia, and so many others), Andy and Veronica for being such great mentors and friends, Jared (who I'm extremely proud of and miss terribly) and everyone else who's been so great to me lately.

To conclude, a few sketches for a kids' video game I've been working on:

Thanks everyone! Less than a month until graduation!

Fuck. Yeah.

Pretty much foaming at the mouth right now I'm so excited.

We had our BIG DETOUR PROJECT JUDGEMENT DAY OF DOOM today. (See post two below this one for my entry.) The judges liked it, I got good feedback and a sense of validation I've been really needing lately. My piece is a finalist of ten for a chance to be on the cover. I was really excited to see all the editors again (I walked into Andy Fish's office and told Jamie Buckmaster to not mind how sweaty I was - why would I say that to someone? Whatever). Veronica's feedback meant a lot to me, as I feel that her comment on my piece when I was doing the colors differently REALLY turned the whole thing around. I still got the weird and slightly eerie feeling from my piece without going overboard, and without her suggestion I don't think I would have been pleased with how it came out.

All of the other entries were fantastic (save one or two), and I'm really impressed with how much work some people put into theirs. It reassures me that I'm working with soon-to-be professionals and that I'm in the right setting for becoming a professional myself. I don't care so much about winning (though I feel my chances are good) as much as I care about getting feedback from people who are doing what I want to be doing. I want to know I'm at least heading in the right direction and/or how I can get better. I know if I'm going to be doing this that I have to do all of the work myself, so any guidance whatsoever is priceless.

Good looks to everybody who worked their asses off on this project, and congratulations to the other finalists as well.

OH OH OH!! Tak from the Dig sent Andy Fish two big copies of my Dig cover from a couple weeks ago - AND HE GAVE ME ONE!!! It's big and beautiful and it has all my lovely pastel-y texture on it and it's officially my most prized possession.

Today is really working out for me. I MUST GO DO ART NOW.

Fruits of my labor.

Thanks to everyone who gave me so much support. I'm truly lucky to know so many wonderful, wonderful people.

Bleeeeeh.

I feel so sick today. And the past week. Not like a cold sick or a fever sick, but horrible heartburn (I have GERD), bad headaches, severe sensitivity to light/sounds, and for some reason I've felt like I'm constantly choking on something - like there's something caught in my throat. I had to leave my favorite class today, but I went home and my boyfriend fed me soup. And I took a nap, so that helped. <3

After I was hospitalized a couple of years ago for GERD (a type of acid reflux illness where your stomach opening to your esophagus doesn't close, causing acid to wash up into your throat), I had to seeeeriously change my eating habits, which is something I've decided to take up again. So no caffeine, carbonated drinks, spicy food, citric acid, greasy foods, fried foods, or iceberg lettuce (yeah). Stress is a GIGANTIC factor in my acid reflux, so I'm going to have to try to find a way to not stress myself out.

And while I'm complaining, the cyst on my left wrist was TWITCHING today. I was afraid it was gonna be like one of those House episodes where someone hallucinates bugs coming out of their skin. But I'm getting surgery for that on Nov. 6th, and hopefully the problem will be gone forever. (Recap: I have an inflamed cyst on my left wrist that's pushing my bones apart and causing carpal tunnel. I've gotten it removed once, but it came back, so we're gonna cut the sucker out this time.)

BUT, there is good news!! I made the cover of the Dig, finally! This was the best news, at the end of the day, when I got out of work at 10 after dying all day, to see a delivery from the Dig to our store with dozens of copies of MY ARTWORK ON THE FRONT!!!

I'm so excited! Pick up a copy and read my bio on the second page! Yay!!

Time for tea and sleep! Bye bye!

Good news!

I really did make the Dig cover! They're in the final production stages now, so look for it soon!

I'm so excited! I'm gonna go celebrate and eat stir fry with my lovely boyfriend.

Yay! <3
